What a lovely story this was (despite the ending which left my mouth gaping....good job J.O Mantel by the way). This was a wonderful second chance at love story that will have you turning page after page to see what will happen. I loved Ash and was so happy when he finally stood up to his boss. I hurt for him and Lauren, I hurt for him later in the book and I also loved him and Gabriela, they were so sweet and loving with each other. I loved watching as they discovered each other, got to know each other and found love with each other.

These characters are well written and very well defined, all of them. From his ass of a boss Damon, to his best friend and co-worker Matt, Courtney, another part of the legal team in Paris...all of them.

I think the only complaint I would have about this book is the wall that I ran slap dab into at the end...face planted right into that thing with my mouth hanging open in shock. Great job!!!

Wonderful story and I recommend it to everyone.

Daddy liked to hit.

Brothers followed suit.

So I ran.

I ran from that life.

I ran from myself.

I ran into him.
I have no experience with the game board we’re playing on, and that makes this a lethal game. One wrong move and my heart could land in the fire he’s created inside me. Worse, it could lead my past to his doorstep and it won’t just be my blood that taints this floor.
I should run.  I need to run.
My father is the devil in a flesh suit, he won’t be happy until he paints this town red for my betrayal.
I should run. I need to run.
Because despite my feelings for Parker Hayes, the devil is coming and he wants what’s his.

Review by Kathy

I am almost at a loss for words. This was in incredibly written book with an incredibly funny, painful, brutal, loving storyline. I was so afraid for a while that I would hate the ending or end up a pile of blubbering foolishness (at work no less). But I adored this story (well not the brutal and painful parts), but besides the wonderful storyline, it's the characters that capture you and pull you into their world, just like you belong there. This story is so much more than the story of just two people, it's the story of family, those you are born to and those that choose you. And it's the one's that chose Haley that are the most amazing of all. Acceptance into their lives was so hard for her considering her background and her past, and it is her past that is chasing her that changes her life, once for the good, and once for the bad. But this family is so strong and their love for her is unbelievably strong that it defies the devil himself.

The characters are wonderfully written and very well developed. I'll start with the worst..her birth family...Her father and brothers are the spawn of Satan himself! Enough said about them. Her mother, well she's not the mother she should have been and we will leave it at that! Her brother Kaylen is another story. He left her when she was only 8 (he was 16), and she's hated him since then, but deep down she loves him. She just feels so betrayed that he left her with those evil spawns that she can't help but fight him tooth and nail when he turns up again.

Now, her new "family". There's her best friend Drew. I swear we all need a friend like him. The banter between these two is unreal and will have you in stitches. Drew is a man-whore...no..that's wrong, he's just "hungry"! He also has no filter between his brain and his mouth and has no problem with blurting out anything! He adores Haley and will stop at nothing to see that she is happy, and includes punching his brother Parker for being an ass to her.

Parker....oh Parker! We all want a Parker in our lives (and bed) as well. He falls hard and fast for Haley and immediately joins with Drew to become her protector, but he wants more. He wants all of her, the good, the bad and the ugly. He's (Drew too) handsome, big and hot!

Josh is Parker and Drew's uncle and is Haley's boss. He quickly takes her under his wing, not knowing her story, but knowing she's running from something or someone. He's another of her protectors and he loves her dearly. Maria is his girlfriend, and is the mother figure to the two boys and now to Haley. She is as sweet as she can be and you would love to be a part of her life.

Haley has it good, but she is so broken that she doesn't realize just how much these people would do to protect her. She has secrets, scars both on the inside and outside that she tries so hard to hide. Her self-worth is near zero, and even with these loving people around her she still feels that she is worthless and that they would all be better off without her. When her past catches up and threatens their lives, Haley makes a deal with the devil and leaves them all behind, getting her brother to help her. But you know how secrets are, they will come out one way or another and Haley's secrets will be discovered in a most brutal, heartless way. One that will have you holding your breath as you turn the pages.

This is an OUTSTANDING read and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND it. Do not let this book pass you by. You will regret it if you do.

Excerpt

I made forty bucks at VIN’s which is really good considering it’s just a dive bar, and HEAT is bloody packed tonight. Josh added two additional fire shows to appease the crowd and we’re making a killing. The usual banter between Drew and I has been on fire with all the people giving additional tips for funny bartenders.

Sliding three cocktails down the line, I spin to grab a clean towel when my freaking world comes to a halt.

“Hi Ryan.” Everything freezes.

Not just my body, but the blood in my veins, the heart in my chest, and the air in my lungs, they all freeze at that voice. The stillness is replaced by a vibration in my bones as I slowly turn around.

Messy, overgrown hair falls in blonde locks over familiar gray eyes. Jesus Christ…

“You were harder to find then I thought.” What the fuck, how is it- this isn’t- I don’t. I don’t know what’s happening. “Especially since you’re not blonde anymore.

I don’t speak, all I’m capable of doing is staring. I examine his nose, that despite being broken countless times remains straight. My eyes travel to his strong jaw that’s slightly dusted with facial hair. Jesus Christ, it’s actually him.

“You alight, Hales?” Drew’s hand falls on my lower back, and despite my hate for being touched, he grounds me as I stare into the eyes of my long lost brother. “Move along friend.”

Kaylan lets out a dark chuckle that isn’t friendly. “How about you go back to work, friend. This is important.”

“I’m sure it is, but this is a business and she has work to do. So, I'm going to ask politely that you order your drink and move along.”

“I’m not here to drink, I’m here to talk to Ryan.” I shudder at the name.

Ryan’s dead. She died in that hell hole a year and a half ago.

I'm a fun loving book dragon who has the ability to make sailors blush with colorful language and obscene gestures. I love reading, mostly romance, young adult and new age. I'm a part of a BANGerangin' book club that is guaranteed to be better than yours. I like to spend my days wondering around department stores while reading erotica out loud, scaring the piss out of people, and playing "The floor is lava". (Adulting is lame.)

Review by Kathy

Beautiful story! A different type of second chance at love read (at least that's how I saw this story). This wasn't about a second chance at love between a man and a woman, but a dying father and the son he wronged so terribly. Its a story of letting your guard down and allowing love to enter once again, to learn to trust someone with your heart. So, you could say it was a second chance at love, just not with the same two people. I loved this story. I loved the detail that was given to the hospice nurse's duties and her feelings. I loved how she handled her patient and his son's situation and allowed it to surface when it needed to. I loved these wonderfully written characters who were so very well defined and so enjoyable to read. I loved Jack and Laken's quick witted banter, Jack and Cyler banter and mostly their last words.

What didn't I like, well only one thing..or person. Breelee. She could have just stepped off into the canyon, but since she didn't, I really kept waiting for more trouble from her, something a little more, not to break the couple up, but maybe have Laken just really lay into her. But other than that, there wasn't anything else that I didn't like.

This is a wonderful story, with wonderful characters and some very hot scenes to satisfy those who love some "spice" in their reads. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK.

Review by Barbara

What a wonderful story about love, life and living life to the fullest. The author has written an extremely touching story about the circle of life. The characters she has written are just so perfect for the storyline as well: full of wit, wisdom and charisma.

Jack is dying. He hires a nurse, Laken, to stay with him for his final few months to aid in his care. Jack also has a son that he hasn’t spoken to in years due to wrongs Jack commented years ago. When Cyler, his son, learns Jack is dying he returns in order to gloat and get his long awaited revenge. What he wasn’t expecting to find was a feisty nurse that takes his breath away and has a miraculous outlook on life and death. Can Laken somehow bring a bit of peace to Cyler and Jack?

I can express how heartwarming this story is or how much more it is than just a romance book. It is most definitely worth reading and one-clicking. You won’t be sorry you did. 2 Thumbs Up for a wonderful story and for 2nd chances at making things right!

Excerpt

His gaze shamelessly took in her silhouette against the evening sun, and he edged closer. Yet with each step, it wasn’t enough. Rather like a magnet, she pulled him in, and he didn’t want to fight the impulse.
Softly, he reached up and tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear, his body heating as she met his gaze, then shyly diverted her eyes. He traced his fingertips down her neck then gently grasped her shoulder, encouraging her to turn and face him fully. Anticipation flooded him. Her breath quickened, and her pink tongue darted out to caress her lower lip, enticing him. Deliberately, he leaned forward, watching as her eyes widened, but quickly she stepped out from his hold, putting several feet of distance between them.
“No. I can’t.” She wrapped her arms around her waist, hugging herself. Her eyes were bright with suppressed excitement, encouraging him.
“Why?” he asked, stepping forward.
Laken edged back. “This is the very definition of conflict of interest.” She arched a brow but grinned, her posture relaxing.
“I’m not going to take no for an answer.” He gave a small grin in return, taking a step closer.
She laughed, rolling her green eyes. “Why am I not surprised?”
“Just being honest.” He shrugged.

“Thank you. I think.” She chuckled again, the sound slightly nervous. “Unless you’re not interested?” He let the question linger, closing the distance as he watched indecision, desire, and hesitancy flash across her face. “That’s beside the point—”
“That is the only point,” he interrupted.

“I...I could lose my job.” She spoke quietly.
“Are you on the clock right now?” Cyler reached up, tracing the line from her ear along her jaw, pausing at her full lips.
“It’s complicated. But in short, no.” she murmured, her expression softening.
“Good.” Without giving her a chance to protest, he closed the final distance between them and sealed her lips with his.
At first contact, he realized the danger he’d just invited. It wasn’t just a kiss; rather, each nerve had come alive, demanding more. Angling his head slightly, he was able to capture more of her kiss, deepening the exchange as his tongue ran along the seam of her lips, begging for entrance. He could feel her hesitation melt as she leaned into him, her lips caressing his, inviting, intoxicating him with each touch.
As she opened her mouth, her arms tentatively grasped his forearms before sliding up to his shoulders then pulling him in tight. Cyler’s already- burning body smoldered deeper, demanding more than just a kiss. Yet he held himself in check, in spite of the pounding blood that seemed to overtake every other sense.
His hand slid up her back, mapping the delicate curve of her waist. Her tongue met his, stealing every other rational thought as he accepted her invitation and tasted the full flavor that was Laken. Her fingers slid up from his shoulders, threading through his hair and tugging, causing his heart to pound harder, his body to grow even harder as he pressed into her soft curves. He breathed in her soft gasp as he bit on her lower lip, pulling her in, leading her. He mated with her lips, fusing his with hers, searing his brand with each brush of his lips, each caress of his hand across her waist.
Abruptly she pulled away, her green eyes wild as they blinked up at him, staring deep into his soul. Naked in his eyes—yet fully clothed—she studied him, and the kiss had him off guard just enough that all the careful walls he’d constructed were still lowered.
Damn it all.
“So...that just happened,” she whispered, a hand reaching up to touch her pink lips. “Whoa.” She swallowed, his eyes capturing each minute movement, each tiny shift of her gaze.
Then she smiled.
“To be fair, I did warn you I wasn’t taking no for an answer.” He relaxed slightly, feeling less exposed and vulnerable.
“You did.” Her gaze flickered to the ground as her lips tipped into a lopsided grin.
“And I’ll be straight with you. I’m going to kiss you again.”
Her gaze shot back to his, widening slightly. “So, you’re saying I don’t get a choice?” She flirted.
He chuckled. “I’m saying you don’t really want one.”
She rolled her eyes. “A little sure of yourself, aren’t you?” She tucked her hands into her back pockets, regarding him.
He took a small step forward, leaning in to her before whispering, “You kissed me back.”
Her pert nose scrunched up. “Caught that, did you?”
“Yup. Pretty much.” He laughed softly, reaching out and tugging on her elbow, and she willingly released her hand from her back pocket.
“Fair warning?” she asked as he leaned in.
“Fair warning,” he murmured before taking her lips once more, astounded at how her warmth captivated him, and how his blood went to an immediate boil.
He’d expected her to moderate the kiss, and he’d been fully prepared to tease her, to test the waters to see how far she’d let him push, but what he hadn’t been prepared for was her response.
Rather than play hard to get, she returned the kiss with full force, biting his lower lip and fanning the already-burning flames. Her hands mapped his back, kneading, tracing, driving him crazy with each touch, reminding him that he could—should—be closer. He groaned as she tugged on his button-up shirt, sliding her hand up his chest, skin on skin.
He breathed in her sigh as he splayed his hands across her hips, pulling her closer then rocking her against him. He was taken by surprise when she kissed then bit him gently on the neck before quickly disentangling herself from his grasp and walking away.
Confused, he turned to watch as she glanced over her shoulder, giving him a teasing grin. “Fair warning.”
Cyler’s face broke into a wide smile, one that caused his cheeks to ache with an unfamiliar yet welcome pain as he watched her hike back up the hill. “Are you just going to stand there and stare, or are you going to hurry up? Daylight’s burning.” She taunted as she continued her trek toward the truck. Cyler rubbed the back of his neck with his hand, shaking his head, and grinning. “Is that how it’s going to be?”
“Are you complaining?” Laken turned, taking a few steps backward on a flatter portion of the hike.

“No, ma’am,” Cyler replied, starting toward her.

“Good.” She giggled and finished the hike with him not far behind. When Cyler reached Laken, he grasped her hand in his and kept it tight the whole way back to the ranch. The sunset’s glow made her face appear even more flushed, and he couldn’t help the smug satisfaction that he’d done that to her. It had been a long time since he’d felt that way, since he’d even wanted a woman to wear his kiss. It was disconcerting, yet electrifying all at once, but as much as he wanted to ride the wave of excitement, he felt the familiar suspicion creep in, the kind that made him question if this were truly real.
Because heaven only knew how he’d been fooled before.
Cyler glanced over to Laken, meeting her gaze and smiling before he back to gazing out the window.
The past was the past. This was a chance for a new future. Let that serve as fair warning...to his heart.

Review by Kathy

Definitely a made for Hallmark Christmas movie type of read, and one that brings all the feels along with it. It was a beautifully written story of finding love during the Christmas season, chocked full of everything Christmas along with an apparent Christmas Angel and a trip back in time. I don't want to give any more away because you have to read the story to get the full effect and all the feels. I will say that at one point I was afraid that something would happen to make this story take a bad turn...and I'll leave it at that. You will have to find out for yourself.

The characters (all of them) were wonderfully written, well developed and quite charming and entertaining. I loved Adeline and William (Will) and I adored her Great-grandmother and Great-grandfather and their back story.

This is a wonderful Christmas read and one that I am sure that people who love watching Hallmark Christmas movies will thoroughly enjoy. I highly recommend this book!
